What Your Nails Say About Your Health

White Nails and Health Indicators
White nails, known as leukonychia, can indicate various health issues, from minor trauma to more severe conditions like anemia, heart or kidney disease, or even poisoning. In cases where nails are mostly white with darker rims, liver problems like hepatitis could be a concern. This symptom is sometimes accompanied by jaundice, or a yellow tint in the skin around the nails. Observing changes in nail color and consulting a healthcare professional can be a proactive step for those concerned about underlying health conditions.

Yellow Nails and Possible Fungal Infections
Yellow nails often point to a fungal infection, which can cause thickening and crumbling as it progresses. In rarer cases, yellow nails may signal conditions like severe thyroid disease, lung disease, or psoriasis. Yellowing nails combined with symptoms like cracking and splitting may indicate both a fungal infection and possible thyroid issues. Proper treatment, including antifungal medications and medical consultation, can often restore nail health.

Bluish Nails and Oxygen Levels
A bluish tint to the nails can suggest insufficient oxygen levels in the body, possibly due to lung conditions like emphysema or heart-related issues. This discoloration is an indication that the body may not be circulating oxygen effectively. If nails are persistently bluish, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, as this symptom may signal underlying respiratory or cardiovascular concerns.

Rippled or Cracked Nails: Signs of Inflammation
Rippled or pitted nails may be an early sign of inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis or arthritis, with discoloration often visible beneath the nail. Brittle, dry nails that crack or split frequently can be associated with thyroid disease, particularly when combined with a yellow hue, which could also indicate a fungal infection. Regular nail care and a check-up with a dermatologist can help address any concerns and guide proper treatment if necessary.
